- Description: Born in the German-speaking Sudetenland (Czechoslovakia) to Austrian parents, Walter Stolle settled in England after losing everything in the aftermath of World War II. After five years of preparation, on 25 January 1959 he set off from Romford, Essex, on a bicycle journey that lasted 18 years. He covered more than 646,960 km (402,000 miles), visiting 159 countries - at the time a Guinness World Record for the longest individual bicycle journey. He financed the journey by giving around 2,600 lectures and slide shows in seven languages. He returned to England in 1976
